Debcamp projects

Here you can find more information about the projects that people planned to work on during Debcamp. This is just an attempt at gathering the information at hand, nothing here was set in stone. The Debcamp mailing list was used for discussing these projects.

If you feel that something is missing here, please contact Peter Karlsson.

Debian-Installer

Leaders
Tollef Fog Heen, Petter Reinholdtsen, Martin Sjögren
Description
Debian-installer is coming into shape, but still needs quite a bit of work in order to release sarge.
Work was supposed to include:
  • Porting debian-installer to other platforms and ironing out architecture bugs
  • Fixing usability issues
  • Release a beta version
Also, see the TODO list in debian-boot CVS.

Debian Package Tags

Leaders
Enrico Zini, Erich Schubert
Description
The goal for this project is to move the package tags from an experimental project to a real enhancement for Debian.
Work was supposed to include:
  • explaining what package tags are, how they can be used and what is the current status
  • discuss better ways to integrate them in the Debian workflow
  • test and improve the existing implementation
  • possibly, implement package tags related features in some package manager or other Debian tool

Automatic network detection and system reconfiguration

Leader
Enrico Zini
Description
There are many tools to do that in Debian, and many of their developers are present at the Debcamp. It's a great opportunity to discuss together the situation, to build a better and common view of the problem and share development efforts.
From the discussions in the Debcamp list so far, everybody has lots of ideas to share.

Metadistros/subdistros/flavours

Leader
Enrico Zini
Description
There will be many people that's part of a Debian metadistro/subdistro/flavour project of some kind. I'd like to take advantage of the possibility of everybody meeting in person to work on a common infrastructure to make it easy to build your own specialised Debian, and let people concentrate mainly in their specific customisation efforts.
I'd like to have a look at Knoppix, Morphix and FAI, which all provide useful features like hardware detection, bootable live CDs and distro customisation, as possible sources for already implemented infrastructure.
I'd also like to have a BOF to decide an official, unique, marketable name for a specialisation of Debian, since I'm tired of using "metadistros/subdistros/flavours" every time :)

Subproject for non-profit organisations

Leader
Benj. Mako Hill
Description
Connected to or stemming from discussions about metadistros, subprojects, flavours, and debtags will be a project connected to brainstorming and beginning work on a a new Debian subproject for nonprofit organisations. For more information see the recent announcement and the project website. Participants are encouraged to join the mailing list before attending Debcamp to involve participants not present at Debcamp/conf.

Debian-specific usability issues

Leader
Enrico Zini
Description
I'd like some discussion and brainstorming with other devels, so that my final talk can show a picture made by the experiences and view of more people.
Work would include:
  • exploring the uniqueness of Debian
  • finding the features and problems it introduces
  • analysing the computer mediated communication (CMC) inside the community, to see what are the differences between doing group work with and without physical meetings.
  • finding the features and problems introduced when working with just CMC
